Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are injectable medical devices used to restore volume, support facial contours, and improve selected lines, folds, or structural imbalances. In aesthetic facial treatments, they allow precise correction of age-related volume changes while maintaining natural facial proportions.
At Dr. Saljo, dermal filler treatments are approached as medical facial procedures, not as simple volume injections. Each treatment is guided by detailed anatomical assessment, precise product selection, and a strong focus on safety. In anatomically sensitive or higher-risk areas, ultrasound imaging may be used to visualize underlying structures, support accurate placement, and enhance treatment safety.
Science Behind
Most modern dermal fillers used in aesthetic medicine are based on hyaluronic acid, a molecule that naturally occurs in the skin, connective tissue, and joints. Hyaluronic acid binds water and contributes to hydration, elasticity, and tissue softness.
In dermal fillers, hyaluronic acid is processed into a sterile gel and stabilized so it remains in the tissue for a longer period of time. Different fillers are designed with different degrees of firmness, elasticity, and integration into the tissue. This allows the physician to choose a product according to the treatment area, tissue quality, and desired effect.
The role of dermal fillers is not simply to “fill wrinkles.” Facial aging involves several layers: bone support changes, fat compartments shift, connective tissue becomes weaker, and skin loses elasticity. Carefully placed filler can support selected anatomical structures, restore lost volume, improve contour, and soften shadows or folds caused by structural changes.
The development of modern fillers has evolved significantly over time. Earlier injectable materials were less refined and less predictable. With the introduction of collagen fillers and later hyaluronic acid fillers, aesthetic medicine moved toward more biocompatible, precise, and controllable treatments. One important advantage of hyaluronic acid fillers is that they can be dissolved with hyaluronidase when medically indicated.
Modern filler treatment is therefore based on anatomy, product science, and proportion — not on adding volume alone.
Treatment Areas
Dermal fillers are used to restore volume, support facial structures, improve contour, and improve skin hydration in areas affected by age-related volume loss, structural changes, or anatomical imbalance. Treatment planning focuses on precise placement, appropriate product selection, and preservation of natural facial proportions.
Depending on individual anatomy and treatment goals, dermal fillers may be used in the following areas, considered from the upper face downward:
Upper face: forehead, temples, and tear trough area
Midface: cheeks and nasolabial folds
Central face: nose
Lower face: lips, area around the mouth, chin, and jawline
Skin quality and hydration: neck, décolleté, and hands
In anatomically sensitive or higher-risk areas, ultrasound imaging is frequently used to visualize underlying vessels and tissue planes, supporting accurate placement and enhanced treatment safety.
Planning & Safety
Each treatment begins with a structured facial assessment. Facial anatomy, volume distribution, symmetry, and tissue characteristics are evaluated at rest and during movement to guide individualized treatment planning.
A 3D facial analysis is used to assess proportions, asymmetries, and structural relationships. This supports precise planning of filler type, depth, and placement rather than standardized injection patterns.
In anatomically sensitive or higher-risk areas, ultrasound imaging is frequently used to visualize underlying vessels and tissue planes, supporting accurate placement and enhanced treatment safety.
Dermal fillers are medical products that require detailed anatomical knowledge and clinical experience. Product selection, dosage, and injection technique are tailored to the individual, with a conservative, safety-focused approach.
Combination Treatments
For harmonious and durable results, dermal fillers are often combined with complementary treatments that address different layers of facial aging, skin quality, and overall facial balance.
Depending on individual anatomy and treatment goals, this may include:
Aesthetic Botox
To rebalance muscle activity, soften expression lines, and reduce downward pull that may influence facial shape or contour.Regenerative Treatments
To improve hydration, texture, glow, and regenerative skin health with treatments such as skinboosters, polynucleotides, PRP, exosomes, or medical peels.Biostimulators
To support collagen production, skin firmness, and long-term tissue quality, especially when reduced elasticity or tissue weakness is present.RF Microneedling
To stimulate collagen remodeling, improve firmness, and address skin laxity or texture concerns that fillers alone cannot correct.Laser & Light-Based Treatments
To improve pigmentation, redness, sun damage, skin texture, and overall skin clarity.
Good to Know
Treatment time
Usually 45–60 minutes, depending on the areas treated and the extent of correction.
Comfort during treatment
Treatment is generally well tolerated. Lidocaine, a local numbing medication, is used to numb the injection area, and a vibration anesthesia device is used to further improve comfort during treatment.
Downtime
Minimal downtime. Mild swelling or bruising may occur. Most daily activities can usually be resumed immediately.
When results appear
Results are visible immediately after treatment and continue to refine as swelling subsides over the following days.
How long results last
Depending on the product used and treatment area, results typically last between 9–18 months.
Repeat treatments
Maintenance treatments may be recommended to preserve results. Treatment intervals are planned individually.
Side effects & risks
Temporary swelling, redness, tenderness, or bruising at injection sites may occur.
Potential risks and rare complications are discussed in detail during consultation.
Expectations
The goal is natural-looking volume restoration and facial balance, not overcorrection. Results should integrate harmoniously with facial anatomy.
Prices
Dermal filler treatments are priced according to the amount of product used and the individualized treatment plan. An exact treatment plan, product selection, and final cost are determined during the medical consultation.
